A contemporary Soho dining space that brings the warmth, colour and sociability of Indian street culture into a bold architectural setting.

The brief

Biryani Kebab Chai was envisioned as more than a restaurant; it was designed as a vibrant expression of India’s rich street-food culture within the heart of Soho. The brief called for a compact yet memorable dining experience that celebrates the warmth of traditional hospitality while embracing the energy of London’s fast-paced dining scene. Inspired by historic Indian architecture such as the Shahi Baoli stepwell and the social culture of chai pe charcha, the design explores earthy textures, terracotta tones and layered materials. The interior reflects the brand’s identity through warm lime-plastered walls, bold geometric colour compositions and handcrafted details that echo the spirit of Indian streets and heritage spaces.

Scope of Work

Kotak Design developed the full interior concept and spatial strategy for the restaurant, carefully shaping a narrow Soho site into an engaging dining environment. The design integrates bespoke seating, marble table surfaces, walnut joinery and warm plaster finishes, while the brand’s terracotta and saffron colour palette is woven throughout the space. A sculptural ceiling installation formed from stacked clay cups creates a striking focal point above the dining area, celebrating the cultural ritual of chai while adding texture, rhythm and identity to the interior.

A canopy of traditional clay chai cups floats above marble tables and terracotta banquettes, transforming the narrow Soho space into an immersive celebration of Indian street culture. Warm lime-plastered walls, bold geometric murals and the brand’s saffron palette create an atmosphere that feels vibrant, social and unmistakably rooted in heritage.
