A modern Malaysian kopitiam where heritage, warmth and everyday comfort come together in the heart of Canary Wharf.

The brief

Located in the heart of Wood Wharf, Ong Lai Kopitiam was envisioned as a modern Malaysian kopitiam that could bring the warmth of traditional coffee house culture into the fast-paced energy of Canary Wharf. The brief was to translate the brand’s journey—from humble street food beginnings to a refined dining destination—into an immersive customer experience that felt authentic, welcoming and memorable.

Inspired by Malaysian soul food, heritage café rituals and the comfort of gathering over kopi and kaya toast, the design needed to feel relaxed yet distinctive. The intention was to create a space where bold flavours, warm hospitality and cultural identity could be experienced through the interiors as much as through the food itself. Their own brand message, “Born on the Streets, Served from the Heart,” became central to the design narrative.

Scope of Work

Kotak Design supported the delivery of the interior concept, helping shape the design language and translate the brand into a cohesive dining experience. Our work focused on interior detailing, spatial flow, material selection and atmosphere creation, ensuring the restaurant balanced operational efficiency with emotional connection. Particular attention was given to customer journey, seating composition, lighting warmth and the relationship between the open dining environment and the welcoming kopitiam identity. The design needed to feel familiar and comforting while carrying enough visual character to establish a strong destination presence within Canary Wharf.

Designed to translate brand into experience, the space brings together familiar flavours, welcoming interiors and the spirit of gathering—creating a restaurant that feels vibrant, memorable and deeply rooted in the comfort of home. The atmosphere draws from the nostalgia of Malaysian coffee houses—relaxed, familiar and full of life—while responding to the polished urban context of Canary Wharf
